What Happened to Zando?
In October 2024, Zando.co.za announced it was ceasing all operations in South Africa. The platform — owned by pan-African e-commerce group Jumia Technologies — shut down after a strategic review concluded that South Africa accounted for less than 3% of Jumia's total orders. CEO Francis Dufay cited competitive pressures and macroeconomic conditions as reasons for the exit, saying resources would be redirected to nine other African markets.
Zando ran a clearance sale, wound down operations, and went dark. The domain zando.co.za was then acquired in November 2024 by TFG (The Foschini Group) and now redirects to bash.com, with a notice stating: "Zando has closed and endorses Bash as a new shopping destination."
For the thousands of South African sellers who relied on Zando for fashion sales, this was a significant disruption. This article covers what Bash is, why it's not a Zando replacement for sellers, and where SA fashion sellers should go now.
What Is Bash? Is It the New Zando?
Bash is NOT a replacement for Zando — at least not for independent sellers. Here's the key distinction:
- Bash is owned and operated by TFG (The Foschini Group) — South Africa's largest fashion retail group, which owns brands like Foschini, @home, Markham, Sportscene, and Totalsports
- Bash was built by TFGLabs and officially launched on 20 February 2023 — well before Zando shut down
- Bash is a vertically integrated, TFG-controlled platform that sells TFG's own 26 brands plus approximately 500 carefully curated partner brands
- There is no open seller onboarding program — independent fashion sellers cannot simply register and list products the way they could on Zando or Takealot
Bash acquired only the domain name from the Zando liquidation — it did not inherit Zando's seller base, seller accounts, order history, or marketplace infrastructure. Former Zando sellers received no transition support or pathway onto Bash.
That said, Bash is genuinely impressive: it's South Africa's #1 fashion and lifestyle app, has seen 41.4% online sales growth, and offers free click-and-collect from 800+ TFG stores nationwide. It's a major force in SA fashion — just not an open marketplace for independent sellers.
So Where Should SA Fashion Sellers Sell Online Now?
With Zando gone and Bash not accepting independent sellers, here are the best alternatives for South African fashion and lifestyle sellers:
1. Takealot Marketplace — Fashion Category
Takealot is South Africa's largest e-commerce marketplace and has a significant and growing fashion section. Key advantages:
- Massive existing customer base — 4 million+ active shoppers
- FBT (Fulfilled by Takealot) available, including for fashion items
- Fashion sellers who previously sold only on Zando are now moving to Takealot in large numbers — lower competition than established categories
- Commission varies by category (typically 15–20% for fashion)
Best for: Mid-to-large fashion sellers who can manage Takealot's seller requirements and need maximum reach.
2. Bob Shop (formerly Bidorbuy)
Bob Shop is South Africa's most established open marketplace, covering all categories including fashion. Key advantages:
- No monthly seller subscription fee
- Auction + fixed-price listing formats — great for clearing seasonal fashion stock
- Easy, accessible seller registration (no lengthy approval process)
- South Africa's equivalent of eBay for fashion — loyal buyer community
Best for: Small-to-medium fashion sellers, boutiques, and those selling pre-owned, vintage, or limited-run pieces.
3. Your Own Shopify or WooCommerce Store
Building your own branded online store is the most strategic long-term play for fashion brands. You control the customer experience, own the customer data, and pay no marketplace commission. Key options:
- Shopify: Best ecosystem, widest app integrations, globally recognised. Note: Shopify Payments isn't available in SA, so you'll pay an extra 0.5–2% transaction fee when using third-party gateways like PayFast or Peach Payments
- WooCommerce: Free open-source plugin for WordPress. Best SA payment gateway support, no extra transaction fees. Widest adoption among SA fashion boutiques
- Shopstar: SA-built platform, native payment gateway integration, no hidden fees, local support — ideal for SA boutiques wanting a straightforward own-store setup
Best for: Brands serious about building a long-term customer relationship and brand identity.
4. Etsy — For Handmade, Bespoke & Design-Forward Fashion
If your fashion brand produces handmade, custom, vintage, or uniquely designed pieces, Etsy offers access to a global audience of 90 million buyers who actively seek out unique, independent fashion labels. South African designers selling African-print clothing, hand-beaded jewellery, and custom garments consistently find strong demand from international Etsy buyers.
- Payments via PayPal or Payoneer (currency conversion applies for ZAR)
- Listing fee: $0.20 USD per item
- Transaction fee: 6.5% + payment processing
Best for: SA designers and artisans with a unique, authentic product story.
5. TikTok Shop — Social Commerce for Fashion
TikTok Shop is the fastest-growing commerce channel globally, and fashion is its dominant category. With 71% of SA users discovering products on TikTok, it's a powerful channel for fashion brands with strong visual storytelling. Products can be purchased directly within the TikTok app (native checkout), dramatically reducing friction between discovery and purchase.
Best for: Fashion brands with content creation capability and a young target demographic (18–34).
6. Instagram Shopping
For fashion brands with an existing Instagram following, shoppable tags on posts and Reels allow followers to purchase directly from your content. Instagram Shopping requires connecting to either Shopify or a Meta Commerce Manager product catalogue.
Best for: Brands with established Instagram audiences looking to convert followers into buyers.
Multi-Channel Is the Smart Strategy
The closure of Zando is a reminder of the risk that comes with relying on a single marketplace. When Zando shut down with relatively short notice, sellers scrambled to find alternatives. The most resilient SA fashion sellers run multiple channels simultaneously:
- Takealot for volume and reach
- Own Shopify/WooCommerce store for brand building and margin
- TikTok Shop and Instagram for discovery and social shoppers
- Bob Shop for auction/clearance and second-hand inventory
- Etsy for international reach (if your product supports it)
Manage Your Fashion Sales with Online POS + Takealot
With Zando gone, Takealot is the most important open marketplace for SA fashion sellers right now. Online POS makes managing your Takealot fashion business straightforward:
- Takealot integration — sync your catalogue, stock, and orders automatically
- Takealot Auto-Repricing Engine — stay competitive in the fashion category 24/7
- Profit-per-SKU reporting after Takealot fees and returns
- In-store POS for brick-and-mortar or market stall sales
- Automatic purchase order generation when stock runs low
Whether you're rebuilding your channel mix after Zando or growing on Takealot for the first time, Online POS gives you the tools to manage it profitably.
